Think Local and Act Global on the TU835 BSc

Spatial Planning and Environmental Management at TU Dublin

The BSc in Spatial Planning and Environmental Management (TU835) is a combined programme delivered by TU Dublin Environment & Planning.  The level 8 programme provides a practical and professionally-accredited pathway to a range of fulfilling careers. It should interest anyone with an interest in addressing climate change and improving the environment.

After a common first year programme, students can choose between two streams: either spatial planning, which focusses on planning the future of towns and cities; or environmental management, which is about managing a sustainable environment for the future.

Year 3 includes a work placement, with many recent graduates going on to find employment with their work placement partner.  Third year also includes a field trip to a European city or region, chosen to demonstrate best practice in sustainable development.  Year four allows full specialisation in a chosen field, including the completion of a research project.

The programme is highly practical and applied, with multiple field-trips and practical project assignments taking place in every year.  Students of the programme have gone on Erasmus and other exchanges to: Beijing (China), Dundee (Scotland), HCU Hafencity (Germany), TU Dortmund (Germany), Tampere (Finland), Lyon (France) and many others.

Students are challenged to think at different scales across the suite of project modules.  National (and trans-national) scales are emphasised in Strategic Planning and Planning Theories and the Future. Regional scales are emphasised in Regional Plan Project and Coastal Zone and Marine Planning.  Sub-regional and neighbourhood scales are emphasised in Local Plan-making and Master planning and Urban Design Project.

The Final Year Integrated Planning Studio Project brings a number of modules together around a place and theme, which is linked to the wider context, as well as addressing local and community issues.  The Natural Environment Project brings students to important protected habitats where they can explore problems and solutions for conserving biodiversity and natural habitats.

Are you passionate about our towns and cities?  Are you curious about the environment and the world around you?  Do you want to join the fight against climate change?  The BSc (Hons) in Spatial Planning and Environmental Management (TU835) is one of Ireland’s top professionally accredited programmes and offers choices, opportunities and careers in creating a sustainable future.
