GMIT DEPT OF BUILDING & CIVIL ENGINEERING ANNOUNCE NEW MOY BURSARY FOR ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS Final year student Pierce Kirrane from Dunmore wins inaugural bursary
Architectural Technology students in GMIT’s Department of Building & Civil Engineering are to benefit from a new bursary announced this semester by MOY Materials. The inaugural bursary was won by final year student Pierce Kirrane, originally from Dunmore, Galway, who was presented with the bursary by Liz McGonigal, Marketing and Communications Director, MOY Materials, at a reception in the college recently.
The MOY Bursary is part of a €10,000 education investment by Moy Materials in participating Higher Education educational colleges and is aimed at creating and building stronger connections for students as they move into their final year and the workplace.
Mary Rogers, Head of Dept of Building & Civil Engineering says: “GMIT is delighted to partner with MOY in supporting our fourth-year students of Architectural Technology. The bursary has been an extension of an affiliation MOY has developed with the college over the past ten years through student awards, project competition sponsorships and industry presentations.”
“On behalf of our students we welcome this generous sponsorship which will support students in their learning. It is particularly exciting as MOY work directly with the building process from the consultative, design, specification stages to the post-build phases. GMIT’s affiliation with MOY helps our students to engage at all levels to garner first-hand knowledge of the construction process and the profession.
Final year students had to compete for the bursary, each required to make a submission outlining their suitability. Three were shortlisted for interview and each presented a selection of their architectural technology project-work. “Liz Mc Gonigal was impressed by all three candidates but Pierce stood out for his excellent presentation, understanding of materials and his passion for architectural technology” adds Ms Rogers.

The Architectural Technology programme at GMIT is professionally accredited by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) and the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and graduates are formally recognised as competent Architectural Technologists within the sector.
