Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) are proud to report that one of their esteemed academics Dr Briege King, Programme Director of the General Nursing programme in the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Early Years was recently invited by Meath Partnership to speak at the launch of the Erasmus + project, Front Winners platform. The project was a collaboration with educational institutes in Cyprus, Portugal and Ireland with the aim to support educators and mentors working with people with Intellectual Disabilities. Briege spoke on her experience of coordinating the Certificate in Skills for Independent Living programme offered by DkIT for people with an Intellectual Disability. Other speakers at the event included Autism support Meath/Louth, See Change Meath, Job Matters, Navan and TÚS, Meath Partnership. The emerging theme throughout the morning was the importance of empowering adults with an Intellectual disability to access third level education courses, employment and support.
DkIT offers a 2-year part-time course which is specifically developed for adults with intellectual disabilities with the aim that learners will develop a lifelong learning ethos with the promotion of inclusion to third level education. The purpose of this course is to enable the learners to develop relevant knowledge and competence to be able to take his/her place in society.
The next intake of students for this course is September 2023. The course is open to individuals over the age of 18 who are either supported by an agency or independent learners who meet the entry requirements.
