A Winters Tale, December 2022
We are starting off 2023 with the announcement of our new Director of Equality and Access, Shaz Oye. Our next production of the academic year Bulrusher opens on 10 February. Bulrusher by American playwright Eisa Davis is the first play selected in the context of our new anti-racism policy which will be launched during the run of the production. 


The Patricia Leggett Playwriting scholarship for the MFA in Playwriting is now open for submissions. Applications are steadily coming in for our undergraduate courses, the deadline is 1 February. Below is information about applying for the scholarshipundergraduate courses, details of our upcoming short courses and ways to support our students this year.

Shaz Oye

Shaz brings extensive experience and expertise in third sector leadership, social justice activism, and creative entrepreneurship to The Lir. With a professional background working in the third sector as a human rights/social justice activist, and in the arts as a creative entrepreneur and arts practitioner, Shaz has contributed towards achieving progressive social change in Ireland. Informed by race, class, gender, and sexual identity this has included addressing LGBTQ+ discrimination, sexual health awareness, and gender equality. We are all really looking forward to working with her.

Bachelor in Acting & Foundation Diploma in Acting & Theatre - Book your audition now. 

First round auditions for our acting courses starting September 2023 are currently underway and will continue to run until March 2023. When you apply you can book your audition slot. Available to book now are in person auditions on 2 and 8 February, and online auditions on 1 and 7 February.

Audition fee waiver
One of our key aims is to ensure fair access to training for the most talented students, regardless of their background. We offer fee waivers to make sure that applicants from low-income households are encouraged to apply. You can download the application fee waiver here or contact [email protected] for more information on how to apply for a fee waiver. 


Patricia Leggett Playwriting Scholarship

Closing date 7 April 2023
Now in its seventh year, the Patricia Leggett Playwriting Scholarship is a fully paid scholarship for a place on the MFA in Playwriting degree at The Lir Academy. You can see more details on the course here. In order to apply for the scholarship, applicants must be qualified to degree level and resident in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Short courses

New year resolutions need a rethink? We have lots of short courses for you to get into this year. This Saturday we have an online Audition Masterclass, ideal for anyone applying to The Lir or any other drama school. During February and March our Physical Theatre course returns and we have a brand new weekend course Introduction to Lighting Design led by our Head of Lighting, Eve D'Alton.

At this acting audition workshop, participants will be guided through the process of preparing for Drama School auditions, through careful selection of monologues and developing characterisation.

By joining as a Friend of the Lir you will be supporting young artists and creative professionals as they hone their craft in our Acting, and Stage Management & Technical Theatre degree courses.
