Welcome to the Post-Primary Languages Ireland/Languages Connect April Newsletter. PPLI offers foreign language supports, resources and training at primary and post-primary levels, and our team of experts work with many partners to diversify, enhance and expand the teaching and learning of foreign languages across all levels of education in Ireland.
 
Applications for Say Yes to Languages are open for the 2026/2027 school year. The deadline for applications has now been extended to Friday 1 May.

Languages Connect funding has been granted for four beginner-level language summer camps aimed at post-primary students. Taking place on university campuses in Dublin and Cork, languages on offer this year include Chinese, Italian, Korean and Portuguese. To find out more about these two-week camps click here>>
A new Arabic Leaving Certificate specification was introduced in 2025. The first exam will take place in June 2027. An online session for prospective students and parents/guardians will take place on Thursday 14 May. Learn about the updated exam and how we can support you. Register now>>
 
Applications for French language immersion courses for primary teachers are now open! Apply to attend summer courses in Rouen, Vichy, and Bordeaux to prepare for the introduction of Modern Foreign Languages in primary. Courses are funded by the French Embassy and PPLI/Languages Connect. Find out more here>>
Last week, the stellar prizewinning #ThinkLanguages Champion Team from Ennistymon Community School spent three days exploring Brussels, visiting European institutions, the Euronews studio and discovering more about where languages could take them in their future careers. #ThinkLanguages Week will take place from 16-20 November 2026. The 2026 Spanish Video Competition received enthusiastic student participation, showcasing creativity, linguistic confidence and cultural knowledge. A student-friendly QR code card promoting Leaving Certificate language classes has been sent to schools nationwide in recent weeks. Guidance counsellors are invited to share these cards with interested students, enabling them to scan the QR code and register directly for fully-funded classes in a range of languages. Read more>>
