April BSBI Newsletter.
In this issue: book for field meetings this Spring; find out about the BSBI Recording App and how you can access it on your phone or laptop; and hear how Micheline Sheehy Skeffington (BSBI President 2022-24) promoted Plant Atlas 2020 across Europe, in the media and in the halls of Government; but first: news of three free webinars for tricky plant groups.
Book for plant ID webinars
We have 3 great plant ID webinars for you to enjoy this spring. Each one lasts for around an hour on a weekday evening and focuses on a tricky plant group; they are all led by BSBI expert botanists and they are all absolutely free!
19 April: A beginner-friendly visit to Bentley Priory LNR with Mark Spencer to hunt for plants that are uncommon in Greater London, such as Southern Marsh-orchid, Harebell and Sanicle.
25-28 April: Residential meeting on the Isle of Wight, aimed at specialist botanists looking to learn to ID and record some of the UK’s c300 micro-species of Dandelion.
10 May: Visit three woodlands in the Chilterns to look for the enigmatic Coralroot and other woodland plants with Astrid Biddle.
Why not get ready for the botanical season ahead by accessing the BSBI Recording App on your phone and/or computer?
You can use it to carry out a full site survey, or for casual records if you spot an interesting plant while you’re out and about.
Your records will go into a separate area on our Distribution Database (one of the world’s largest repositories of biological records), ready to be checked by your BSBI County Recorder.
The BSBI Recording App is super-easy to use, with guidance pages and help on hand if you have any questions. Give it a go!
In the third and final part of our interview with Micheline Sheehy Skeffington, BSBI President 2022-24, read all about:
How Micheline promoted Plant Atlas 2020 in the media and at events across Britain and Spain as well as Ireland, travelling by bike, train and ferry, to minimise her carbon footprint.
How she flagged BSBI’s work, and the importance of recording and monitoring wild plants, to Minister Noonan (Irish Government).
The events she organised, the scientific papers she published, and her future plans.
