MIC Thurles Open Day

The MIC Thurles Open Day on Saturday, 9 of November (10am -1pm), is once again attracting hundreds of registrations from aspiring post-primary school teachers from all over the country. The Open Day will offer a unique insight into college life at the campus and will feature an address from Dr Rebecca Saunders, Vice Dean of the School of Education (Post-Primary), campus tours and programme talks on available subject combinations in Business Studies, Accounting, Religious Studies, Gaeilge, Mathematics and the newest addition to the MIC Thurles’ provision – Home Economics.

According to Dr Saunders: We look forward to warmly welcoming attendees at our Open Day in November. MIC Thurles is a close knit, supportive, dynamic and vibrant community and we are delighted to open our doors and share this with visitors. We offer seven concurrent BA Education degrees across a range of subjects which includes our very popular BA in Education, Home Economics and Business Studies (MI015).”

MIC Thurles’ concurrent teacher education programmes are structured so that the education component is included in each year and the graduate is qualified to teach to honours Leaving Certificate level after completion of their degree. There is no requirement to complete a post graduate Masters in Education. This not only means graduates are qualified in four years, as opposed to six, but there is also the attendant cost savings. Considerable cost benefits are also enjoyed by those who choose to study in Thurles in terms of relative living costs.

In relation to the MIC Thurles Open Day, Dr Saunders adds: The Open Day will provide students, parents, carers and families with a unique opportunity to experience what it is like to study at MIC Thurles. Visitors will be able to meet with academic, professional services staff and current students at the College and find out more about the programmes and subject combinations we offer. There will be opportunities to explore our beautiful heritage campus, tour first-year accommodation and learn about the range of clubs, societies and supports on offer.”

Current student Konrad Gradowski (BA in Education, Mathematics and Gaeilge) said: “When I saw the course in MIC Thurles and that it had the subjects I was interested in, it was a no-brainer for me, and then when I came to the Open Day, I got a real sense of the College. I was able to walk around and feel the vibe of the place, and I knew this was the place for me.”
