Irish Wildlife Insider

Dear Irish Wildlife Trust members & friends,

Spring has emerged with resilience. Puffins and Basking Sharks have returned to our shores, Hawthorn and Gorse have burst forth, Bluebells and Wild Garlic carpet woodlands, and there’s a grand stretch in the evening.

Our volunteers and staff have been busy planning a summer full of community events. National Biodiversity Week in May is an annual highlight in our calendar. See below for info on the first batch of events we have announced and keep an eye out for further updates.

In advocacy news, our new Nature Advocacy Officer, Oisín Ó Neill, wrote to the Department of Education and Youth earlier this week over school materials promoting Sitka Spruce Forestry. The booklet by industry bodies is one-sided, ignoring biodiversity loss and water quality impacts. IWT calls for safeguards on school messaging. Read the Press Release here. The Irish Times, Agriland, and the Claire Byrne Show have picked up on the story so far.

National Biodiversity Week

National Biodiversity Week (Friday 15th - Sunday 24th May) is coordinated by the Irish Environmental Network. All events are free of charge and open to all. See the full listing here.

So far we have seven events published, taking part in Dublin, Wicklow, Limerick, and Cork, with more to be announced next week. Our ticketed events include Bithéagsúlacht agus Gaeilge | Biodiversity and Irish and People for Bees at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin and Hedgerows, a Biodiversity Lifeline in West Cork. These three events are free of charge and with limited spaces, so we advise booking soon!

Join Grace Carr, Marine Advocacy Officer with the Irish Wildlife Trust and Fair Seas, for an overview of just some of the incredible sharks in Irish waters. Sadly, many of these are endangered species. Grace will outline the key pressures facing Irish sharks (bycatch, climate change and human disturbance) and then explain what Marine Protected Areas are and how they can help turn the tide.

Doors open at 19:00. If you like, join us for a chat about the Irish Wildlife Trust and a chance to ask us questions about what we do and how to get involved! The presentation itself begins at 19:30. As always, we’ll follow the talk with questions and then a relaxed social session over drinks—expect good chats, new connections, and plenty of green inspiration 💚
