From Kerry College to An Garda Síochána
Kerry College graduate Dawn has officially been attested as a sworn member of An Garda Síochána. Her journey from secondary school through Kerry College to her new career is a testament to the power of Further Education and Training.
After completing her Leaving Certificate at Mercy Mounthawk in May 2022, Dawn chose to pursue her dream career by enrolling in Kerry College’s Pre-Garda (Legal Studies) course at Clash Road Campus in September of the same year.
"I chose to study the Pre-Garda course because I wanted to gain an insight into the area," she said. "I had no prior experience with any part of the job, so this course gave me the opportunity to explore it in depth while also building my confidence before applying."
Dawn had long aspired to join An Garda Síochána, drawn to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the job and the opportunity to help others in meaningful ways. "I have always been passionate about helping people and have admired the work of An Garda Síochána since I was young," she explained. "Another thing that inspired me to join is that no two days are the same. The unpredictable nature of the job means that every single shift presents new challenges and opportunities to assist people in different ways. There are also so many opportunities within the force, joining An Garda Síochána gives me the chance to develop my skills and explore different areas of policing."
Her time at Kerry College provided a strong foundation in legal studies, procedures, and real-world applications of the law. The course also included unique experiences, such as visits to the Garda College and Limerick Prison, which left a lasting impression.
Kerry College’s Pre-Garda course is designed to equip aspiring recruits with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to pursue a career in law enforcement. It has become a stepping stone for learners eager to gain experience before applying to An Garda Síochána. "Kerry College is committed to providing practical, career-focused education and training that prepares learners for real-world employment," added Stephen Goulding, Principal of Kerry College. "Dawn’s success is a fantastic example of how the Pre-Garda course can help students transition seamlessly into careers in law enforcement. As a school leaver, she made an excellent decision to pursue Further Education and Training to gain insight and experience for career choice. Her hard work, dedication, and passion for public service is truly inspiring, and we are incredibly proud of her."
Now stationed in Dublin as a probationary Garda, Dawn reflected on how quickly her life has changed. "It’s amazing to think that less than a year ago, I was working in retail and in the middle of the Garda application process. And now I am a fully sworn member of An Garda Síochána."
Her story highlights Kerry College’s role in providing high-quality, industry-aligned education and training. As part of Kerry ETB’s commitment to lifelong learning, the college continues to offer dynamic courses that prepare learners for successful careers.
With a strong focus on practical learning, career preparation, and learner support, Kerry College has established itself as the first choice for school leavers and adult learners looking to build their futures.
