SETU Engineering Careers Fair

Earlier this month both Carlow and Waterford campuses held excellent careers fair events for the Engineering Faculty. Over 100 companies attended the events and were extremely impressed with the quality of the students and their willingness to engage to discuss employment opportunities. We are all too aware of the shortage of engineering talent in the region so it was great to see companies leaving with multiple follow-up actions in regards to full time and work placement opportunities.

Thanks to eveyone who exhibited on the day. The Engineering Cluster was delighted to help organise as these events are a fantastic way to demonstrate value to the companies. If you would like to ensure you have a place at next years careers fair please contact stephen.rooney@setu to reserve a place.

Preparing for Offshore wind event

There was a great turnout at the SETU/Wicklow LEO Clermont Campus on October 28th for the “Preparing for Offshore Wind” event. The event was orgainsed by the East Coast Offshore Renewable Energy Network which the cluster is an active contributor to. It was strongly focused on the Supply Chain potential for local industry. The first of these wind opportunities will happen off the East coast and its important to collaborate with the key stakeholders on these projects if we are to maximise our opportunity.

There were contributions from Major developers such as SSE and RWE as well as excellent presentations  from some homegrown companies such as Alpha Marine and G&D Geosolutions. Of particular interest on the day was the number of engineering related representatives in attendance who are proactively investigating how they can pivot their business into the supply chain.

Big thanks to Wickow Leo and County Council as well as all the members of the ORE Network.

High Voltage Systems Students on tour

The Level 6 Certificate in High Voltage Systems offered by SETU/TUS is now in its second year. We were delighted to see that the students from all the different companies have been getting out and about across the region (and beyond) by visiting a number of strategic HV sites that enable them to link the theory learned in class into real life scenarios.

The team have been out with ESB Networks Portlaosie, H&MV’s project in Kilonan and Suir Engineerings project in Phillipstown in recent weeks.

Access to these projects is of huge benefit and provides a real learning experience.

National Skills Report shows Engineering & Construction Occupations

have some of the highest shortages of skills

The recently published National Skills Bulletin shows Ireland’s labour market has proven to be remarkably resilient in recent years. At 74%, the employment rate (persons aged 15-64) was the highest ever recorded. Adverts for professional occupations were dominated by engineering (approximately a fifth) roles. Particular shortages were highlighted in Quality Control, Process, Design, Mechanical, Electrical & Automation Engineering.

At regional level, the size of the workforce in each of Ireland’s eight administrative regions grew over the period; the strongest growth was in the South East (6.1%);

Abbott Kilkenny Opens New €440m Plant in Kilkenny

The new 30,000 metre-square Kilkenny site is set to have the highest production in the world of the company's FreeStyle Libre sensors.

These sensors are among the world’s smallest to monitor glucose for people living with diabetes.

The site is fully electric, powered by six air-to-water heat pumps, and it has 600 solar panels on the roof as well as tanks for collecting rainwater to use onsite. 400 of the jobs originally announced in 2023 are due to come on stream within months in Kilkenny.
