Engineer Your Perfect Career Choice in DkIT

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) offer a common entry Engineering course that is ideal for students who love problem solving and figuring out how to physically make the world around them a better place to live in. DkIT’s Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Engineering (Common Entry) is ideal for anyone who is interested in Engineering but not sure whether to specialise in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

A recent DkIT Engineering graduate survey has reported a phenomenal 100% employment rate 6 months after graduating whether in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical and Electronic Engineering with an extremely high proportion of the students surveyed earning over €35k.

Dr Breda Brennan, Head of School of Engineering, said, “The future is extremely bright for DkIT graduates of Engineering and never has recruitment for this industry been more in demand. We are thrilled to report our 100% employment rate from our recent graduate survey. We pride ourselves in the quality of graduates we produce and relish the feedback from employers on our student’s employability attributes. Our close ongoing relationship with Industry is very important to us in order to develop our courses and cement our graduate’s future employment opportunities”.

She added “Demand for our graduates in a wide range of engineering industries has been strong with many having job offers from both local and national companies shortly after sitting their final exams including: Combilift Ltd, Intel, Hiab MOFFETT Truck-Mounted Forklifts, XOcean, Suretank Ltd., Glen Dimplex, Kingspan Group, Xtratherm, MultiHog, Atkins Global, Local Authorities (Borough and County Councils), Arups, BAM Civils, Sisk and John Paul Construction”

Engineering is a vast subject, encompassing many different specialities across all environments. While engineers work in many different industries, from aerospace and automotive to energy and electronics, all engineers use creativity to design solutions for the problems we face in the world today. DkIT’s Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Engineering (Common Entry) includes a common first year entry which allows students to experience different disciplines before choosing their specialisation of Civil, Mechanical or Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the end of Year 1. In 3rd year students also undertake an industry work placement where they gain important contacts within the industry to help them in their future careers.

This Common Entry Engineering course allows students to experience Civil engineering, which is about protecting, creating, and improving our everyday environment. It involves the planning, design, and construction of facilities that we require for living, for industry and for transport; roads, bridges, buildings, railway, airports, water supply, drainage, flood management and sustainable energy schemes such as wind farms, ocean energy or hydroelectric stations.

During first year of this course, students also get a base understanding of Mechanical Engineering and its importance in every industry sector. Industries include product design and research, aerospace, energy, transport and materials handling, renewable systems, pharmaceuticals, food processing and the Agri-machine sector. Mechanical engineering also includes manufacturing, energy transfers and decarbonising future industries.

And finally, students get an in-depth overview of what it might be like to work as an Electrical and Electronic Engineer. This career path requires a high level of analytical and engineering design skills, and work in exciting engineering fields; renewable energy, product design, telecommunications, manufacturing, food processing, pharmaceuticals, automation, control, building services and petrochemicals.

This Common Entry Engineering course is perfect to get a foundational understanding of Engineering which allows students to make a knowledgeable choice for their future.
