Learning Environments in the Early Years is designed to support you, the early years educator, to provide quality environments for the children you work with. This introductory elearning course is free to use and is suitable for anyone working with children.
Section 1 explores the range and nature of environmental influences that impact on the holistic development of children. It examines some of the main theories of child development, explores what is meant by holistic development, and identifies and examines the factors to consider when preparing an environment that supports this development. This section also looks at Aistear and Síolta, frameworks that set out how quality can be achieved in early years environments, as well as the relevant Irish legislation. Finally, Section 1 considers the importance of consultation with children, observations, assessment and review in relation to learning environments.
Section 2 looks at practical ways early years educators can prepare and maintain indoor and outdoor environments designed to develop and stimulate children’s senses. It considers the stimulation balance and children’s differences in tolerance to stimulation and the need for quiet spaces. Section 2 also highlights ways to involve parents and the wider community in environments for children.
