Social Media - A Whole School Approach to Mental Health

Cycle Against Suicide

Dear all,

Continuing our psychoeducational webinar series 'Mental Health; A whole School Approach' Prof. Fiona McNicholas and Dr. Laura Bond explores the evolving relationship between social media and young people’s mental health within the context of a whole-school approach to wellbeing: https://cas-elearning.com/courses/creating-a-whole-school-approach-to-mental-health/

Drawing on clinical expertise in child and adolescent mental health, Prof. McNicholas examines how digital life intersects with emotional development, identity, relationships and psychological vulnerability. Dr. Laura Bond case studies the Netflix series 'Adolescence', media coverage both in Ireland and the UK, and its findings.

While University College Dublin continue their work on the development of Cycle Against Suicide's  S.M.A.R.T Kids Ireland Programme: Social Media Awareness, Resilience and Tools: https://www.cycleagainstsuicide.com/s-m-a-r-t-kids-ireland/   the above webinar emphasises the importance of consistent messaging across school staff, leadership, students and parents, encouraging schools to move beyond fear-based responses and instead promote balanced, informed and reflective social media use, supporting young people to develop critical thinking skills, emotional literacy and awareness of how online activity impacts their wellbeing.

To support this, Cycle Against Suicide will shortly make available to secondary schools a digital literacy and online safety education resource that promote classroom critical thinking about algorithms, misinformation and online identity.

The above webinar accredits CPD hours for secondary school teachers.

Kind regards,

Caroline.
