Why a Post Leaving Cert Course (PLC) could be the Perfect Option
What is a PLC?
A Post Leaving Cert Course is usually a full-time course that lasts from one to two years. They are held in Colleges of Further Education around the country. PLCs tend to be practical and hands-on with built-in work experience.
Why do a PLC?
- Post-Leaving Cert Courses offer a great local option for after school.
- A PLC course is perfect for someone who is looking to gain skills in a specific area, or who is still trying to decide what sort of job or university degree would best suit them.
- PLCs offer a wide variety of subject areas including business, law, accounting, ICT, social care, childcare, art and design, animal science, healthcare and many more.
- PLCs can provide a solid foundation in your area of study which ensures that you will hit the ground running once you start university. They are the perfect stepping stone into college.
- Specific subject entry requirements do not apply. For example if you do not have the language/maths/science requirement for your university, you can apply the following year through the CAO using your PLC results instead of your leaving cert results.
- Universities reserve places on their courses for PLC graduates (known as QQI route). Always check the codes to see what PLC is accepted for the course you’re interested in: CAO and PLCs
- Student who miss out on high points courses like medicine, physiotherapy, or veterinary can do a PLC in Pre-University Science or related area. From there they can apply for places in universities here, in Europe or UK. There is also the chance to re-sit the HPAT while doing a PLC.
- You can use your SUSI grant for a PLC.
