Memorising pieces of information is often a major problem for students. They struggle with lots of facts, pieces of poetry, and lists of dates. The problem occurs in all subjects and without the advice of an experienced teacher the student may not achieve their true targets. Much has been published on the techniques that help in this area and a little time spent on any of the methods can transform learning.
However techniques alone will not bring mastery unless you understand the material first. Our brains are not good at retaining information that they do not understand, so the very first step has to be about understanding the material.
This article has a good infographic on some of the techniques that help the student.
