Should Ireland Ban Social Media for Under 16s

Hi there,

Children across Ireland are gaining unrestricted access to social media,  long before the legal age of digital consent.

In our latest blog we explore a growing conversation about whether Ireland should follow Australia’s bold new law banning under 16s from social media entirely. Australia’s approach puts the responsibility back on social media companies, with strict age verification and harsh fines for non-compliance.

Could this be the roadmap Ireland needs?

📊 The numbers speak for themselves:

  • 94% of 8–12-year-olds in Ireland own smartphones

  • 82% already have social media accounts

  • 61% of 12–14-year-olds browse online without any restrictions
