Leaving Cert 2024: Why not consider Poland to study medicine, veterinary medicine or dentistry?
As students gear up to make important decisions in anticipation of their Leaving Certificate results, their parents brace themselves to manage the stress and anxiety, knowing that hundreds may not secure their dream courses at home. Many will turn to international programs to pursue qualifications in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine.
According to the Medical Council’s latest Workforce Intelligence Report, 19,328 doctors were reported to be clinically active in Ireland in 2023. Notably, nearly 40% of these clinicians obtained their basic medical qualification outside of Ireland. “Ireland has a high reliance on international medical graduates (IMGs)” said Medical Council president Dr Suzanne Crowe.
“Each year, over eighty Irish students begin their medical education at Poland’s well- established universities, with an additional eighty starting their veterinary studies there as well. Every year, we see more Irish travelling to Poland. Hence, in 3 years’ time we will see an increase in our IMG’s coming from Poland” says Artur Banaszkiewicz, Founder of StudyMedicinePoland.com.
Artur and his team have been supporting hundreds of Irish students in Poland for over a decade. “Leaving Cert students will face a lot of stress due to uncertainty in the coming days. Because of that pressure, students often overlook the option of taking a break to gain practical experience or the option to study abroad, where education is more accessible”, Banaszkiewicz adds. He further reassures, “Many don’t realise that at least four Polish universities will be able to offer places and admit Irish students until late August or early September for an October 2024 start. It’s incredibly rewarding to help so many Leaving Certificate students achieve their ambitions each year; this year, it’s still not too late to make it happen”.
