Royal Meteorological Society April Newsletter
After months of wet weather, could a drier and more settled spell finally be on the cards? We could certainly do with a break from the rain. Following on from a wet winter, March was unsettled, wet and dull. And so far, April hasn’t been much better, particularly for parts of Scotland – Edinburgh received twice its monthly rainfall in just the first ten days of the month.
April showers are said to bring May flowers, but are our spring flowers blooming earlier? Gemma Plumb takes a closer look at whether climate change has affected flowering dates, and how this could affect wildlife and even the price of fruit.
But April showers can also bring my favourite weather phenomenon – rainbows! They not only make me smile but make for great weather photographs. Good timing, given it’s not long now until the launch of this year’s Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year Competition. I’m hosting the online launch event on Tuesday 16th April – hope to see you there.
