ATU Donegal LCCS Project workshops

Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather conditions last week, we were unable to run our yearly in-house workshops here in ATU Donegal, but we are delighted to make available, recorded content, designed to assist Leaving Certificate Computer Science (LCCS) students with this year’s project.

This is the 3rd year we have provided this content, and it has been very well received, with over 3,000 students from over 100 schools every year accessing the content to date.

This year’s brief is based around the phrase: “Data is the new oil” first coined by Data Scientist Clive Humby in 2006. Like oil, data is valuable, but if unrefined it cannot really be used, students are tasked to refine a dataset to uncover its hidden value.

Our content is delivered across 7 separate videos, along with accompanying code. The initial video entitled “What the Brief Entails”, introduces this year’s brief as well as providing an overview of what is required from students in the project.

The brief sets out some basic and advanced requirements for the artefact, we have therefore structured the remainder of our content into 2 sections “Project Advanced Requirements” and “Project Basic Requirements”.
There are 3 videos for each set of requirements:
Basic Requirements:
1. BR1 - Clean the Data
2. BR2 - Analyse and Chart Data
3. BR 3 - Creating the Website

Advanced Requirements:
1.AR1 - Interactive Visualisations
2. AR2 - Form to Database and Analyse the Data
3. AR3 - Recommendations

The content is completely free of change, it is funded by the Department of Computing at ATU Donegal. We just need to gather some information on who is using the material, so a simple 3 question form is all that is required to access it, using the following link:

We would only ask that you kindly make your students aware of our 3-year honours degree, designed specifically for students who have taken Leaving Certificate Computer Science (indeed it is a mandatory requirement for this degree) details for this can be found here: https://www.atu.ie/courses/bachelor-of-science-honours-computer-science.

You will be asked 3 simple questions and upon completion you will be sent an email with login details to access the recordings of the workshops.

We will also be hosting our Easter and end of year (early May) revision sessions for the LCCS Exam, and will be in contact regarding these closer to that time.
