The Irish Labour Market and AI in 2026

The Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) published an Insights Note looking at early impacts of AI on the Irish labour market titled ‘How AI is transforming the Irish Labour Market.

The paper noted a high take-up of AI across the Irish labour market with heightened demand for, and supply of, people with AI-related skills and capabilities. At the same time, the research noted that AI usage within Ireland had doubled since 2023 in part due to a strong base of digital skills and the makeup of the enterprise sector.

Key points from the report

1. AI will change most careers
   AI is more likely to change the tasks people do than simply eliminate entire occupations.
2. AI skills will be needed in many careers
   You do not have to become an AI expert. Basic AI, digital and data skills will increasingly be useful in many different jobs.
3. Strong subject knowledge still matters
   AI works alongside people. Having good knowledge of a subject, combined with AI skills, will be increasingly valuable.
4. Human skills remain important
   Communication, creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and critical thinking are difficult to replace and will remain important alongside technology.
5. Keep learning and adapting
   The jobs of the future will continue to change. Teenagers should develop the ability to learn new technologies and update their skills throughout their careers.
