DkIT Host Exciting & Innovative Tech Event

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) recently held an enormously successful and extremely well attended Tech Careers Event on campus. The Tech Event was held in conjunction with the annual 4th year project exhibition from the Institute’s Department of Visual and Human-Centred Computing, placing the students and their talent at its centre.

The Tech Careers Event was facilitated by DkIT’s award-winning Careers and Employability Centre who put an incredible focus on careers fairs to support students on their career paths. Due to events such as this the Institute are delighted to report that 95% of their graduates are in employment or further education within 6 months of graduating.

DkIT has a long and proud history of being the go-to Institute for highly skilled tech graduates both internationally, nationally and regionally. Among those from the industry who attended on the day were ABB, Amazon, Aphix Software, Creative Technology Ireland, CuskenSyncIT, Intact Software and Prometric.

There was great energy at the event as the 4th year students showcased apps and games, developed as part of their Collaborative Project module, to potential employers attending the Tech Careers Event. Each team pitched their app/game to an industry-led panel of judges, who after much deliberation selected LabelTech as this year’s Best Project. LabelTech was developed in collaboration with Monaghan Mushrooms, a leading global exporter of mushrooms from the region. The LabelTech system promises huge cost savings by combining a camera and smart image analysis system on a factory line with a web app to detect and alert of manufacturing label issues.

Head of School of Informatics and Creative Arts, Prof. Fergal Mc Caffery launched the public session of Expo by presenting the award for Best Project to LabelTech and Best Individual Student to Games Development student, Leanne Creedon from Dundalk.

The DkIT Tech Careers Event was designed to be an interactive on-campus opportunity for Tech employers and DkIT students to connect. The day comprised of 4 main elements which included a Programme Overview which allowed the staff from Informatics & Creative Arts School to update all attendees on course developments. The employers presented to the crowd on their graduate opportunities, the final year student projects were on display which was a fantastic occasion for employers to engage directly with these students and see the innovation and skills applied on their key projects and the final element of the day was networking which facilitated the opportunity for employers and students to meet at employer stands and discuss potential opportunities further.
