Space Week 2022 

 Space Week 2022 takes place from 4th to 10th October.  Find out what events are taking place near you or online or how you can register your own event at www.spaceweek.ie  

The ESERO Ireland Space Week primary classroom resource is “Infrared Astronomy”.  Our colleague Frances in Blackrock Castle Observatory is hosting primary teacher CPD sessions on this resource on 20th September at 4pm (online) and 21st September at 7pm in Blackrock Castle Observatory.  Register here for that workshop to explore the world of Infrared light with Frances and decipher some of the images coming from the James Webb Space Telescope 

The Space Week Programme for ESERO Space goes to School is now open for registration.   Scientists and engineers share their education and career experience directly into primary and secondary school classrooms.  Note:  A good internet connection is required.    Find out about the speakers available and how to register here.

ESA Teach with Space teacher training opportunities 

The European Space Agency e-technology lab workshops in Transinne, Belgium have now reopened after COVID-19 Restrictions (subject to COVID conditions).  Technology and robotics workshop for primary school teachers will take place on 17/18 November and 8/9 December.  The e-technology lab workshops use a range of educational technology tools (including but not limited to LEGO education, Raspberry Pi and Arduino) within the context of space to enable participating teachers to engage and inspire their students in STEM subjects.  Teachers will also learn how to use these educational tools to participate in ESA classroom projects with their students.  You can find out more information here. 

ESA School Projects 

The European Space Agency (ESA) has four exciting school projects for primary schools this year.   These projects replicate real science projects and give the students opportunities for hands-on learning and a chance to develop their scientific skills and 21st Century Skills.   The ESA Classroom projects will launch in September and we’ll have more details in our next newsletter.

Climate Detectives is for students aged 8 to 19 years old and will launch on 16th September.  Students identify a local problem, investigate it using real data and then propose some solutions 

Learn to code while exploring space! You can conduct scientific investigations in space by writing computer programs that run on Raspberry Pi computers aboard the International Space Station! Two missions are available for beginner and more experienced coders in the Astro Pi competitions: Both missions will launch on 12th September. 

Launching on 14th September the Moon Camp Challenge enables students to use innovative learning technologies to design their own Moon settlement with a 3D modelling tool (Tinkercad or Fusion 360).  There are three different categories for this challenge. 

Moon Camp Discovery:  recommended for students aged 6 to 14 years old. 

Moon Camp Explorers:  up to (and including)14 years old 

Moon Camp Pioneers:  15 to (and including) 19 years old. 

It’s time to get up, move your body, and train like an astronaut! In Mission X, you’ll learn the key elements to keeping fit and staying healthy in space and on Earth. Complete physical exercises and scientific investigations developed by scientists and astronaut trainers. Earn points to help mascots Luna and Leo walk to the Moon.
