Teaching Computing - the issues

Over the past few years, computing has become a firmly established part of primary and secondary education across the UK and Ireland. Yet mandating a subject in the curriculum is only the beginning. The much harder challenge is enacting the subject in the classroom, including who teaches computing, what should be taught and how, and how this can be supported.

At the Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre, we led a large-scale survey of computing teachers across the five jurisdictions of the UK and Ireland: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. Collaborating with researchers from across all five countries, we surveyed hundreds of primary and secondary teachers and combined their responses with an analysis of each country’s computing policy and curriculum.

The result is a rich picture of the computing teacher profession, which we have shared through several academic papers, an openly available data report, and the survey instrument itself. In this blogpost, we share some of our key findings and trends.
