Most of the ebooks offered by the Digital Library through the ProQuest eBook Central and EBSCO eBooks for FE platforms use digital rights management (DRM) to limit access to what the licence allows. This entails using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to open and read ebooks that you have downloaded to your device. Adobe Digital Editions hasn't been updated in a while and some organisations may prevent its use because of this. EBSCO has announced that it is switching from ADE to a new DRM system called LCP DRM. This has some advantages over ADE: - LCP DRM is a modern standard which is safe and secure
- LCP DRM does not require users to have an Adobe account
- Improved accessibility
- A switch from a US tech company (Adobe) to a European nonprofit (The European Digital Reading Lab)
As part of this transition, all libraries will be automatically enabled for LCP DRM on April 14, 2026 or May 19, 2026. The key details: - The recommended reader app: Thorium Reader (Windows, macOS, Linux), which meets WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards and supports text-to-speech, adjustable fonts, annotations, and more.
- Patron login: Patrons will continue to use their MyEBSCO accounts. To open their first DRM-protected file in Thorium, they’ll enter a one-time EBSCO passphrase per device
