BIM report - Irish aquaculture sector cutting waste and protecting environment

Ireland’s aquaculture industry is finding new ways to reduce waste and protect the marine environment. A recent report from Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) shows that fish and shellfish farmers are increasingly repairing, reusing and recycling equipment rather than throwing it away.

The BIM Aquaculture Legacy Gear Survey Report 2025 is the first nationwide study of what happens to aquaculture equipment when it reaches the end of its useful life. It collected information from 188 marine aquaculture producers, representing about 72% of Ireland’s marine aquaculture production units.

The survey covered the rope mussel, Pacific oyster and marine finfish sectors.
