Eurostat highlights need for more effort in teaching of European languages in Irish SchoolsLeuven

 

Eurostat, the European Union’s official statistical office, has highlight the need for Irish schools to improve the level of language skills among lower secondary school students.  The opportunities for young people to take up careers in Europe are being hampered by the lack of resources in this area of the education system.

According to the report, published this month, Irish schools are well below the norm across Europe. Most schools outside of Ireland and the United Kingdom study English as their first choice for a second language but Irish schools need to respond with great emphasis on taking up and maintaining a European language throughout the second level cycle.
