Moate Business College Art Graduate Creating a Huge Impact in the World of FILM Special Effects
My name is Johnny Murphy and I am a 28yr old Model maker and Prosthetic Make up FX Artist from Ballinagore in Co. Westmeath.
Art has always been a massive part of my life and ever since I was very young I knew I wanted to work on Film and TV Shows. I remember watching the likes of Terminator 2, Jurassic Park or Star Wars and wondering how did they build those creatures and Prosthetics and how could I learn to do that too.
After I finished Secondary School in Kilbeggan I set out to get my Portfolio together. That’s when I found out about the Moate Business College Portfolio course. It was exactly what I needed and really set me on the road to achieving my goals. After a lot of hard work with the help of great teachers in Moate Business College, I had a strong portfolio that got me in to Dun Laoghaire institute of Art & Design Model making, Design and Digital Effects 3yrs later I graduated with my degree and a good set of skills which I immediately began to practice and improve upon. I also began branching out into Prosthetics and FX. For a year or 2 I sculpted likeness portraits of movie characters and actors for collectors around the world while also working on some low budget films. My name is Johnny Murphy and I am a 28yr old Model maker and Prosthetic Make up FX Artist from Ballinagore in Co. During this time I also got the opportunity to teach a 7 week course in Moate Business College which was a great experience in itself. I got to teach the 2 portfolio classes as well as the art and craft class a course on making latex display masks. This included sculpting, moulding, casting and painting. It was a great opportunity to see things from the other side of the desk. Its hard work there too.
I have since gotten to work for Nick Dudman (a two time Bafta winner and EMMY and Oscar nominated prosthetic artist) who created the creatures and prosthetics for all the Harry Potter films, Batman and Star Wars to name a few. I worked for him on Season 2 and Season 3 of Penny Dreadful and will be returning to work on the 4th.
I have also recently finished working on Season 4 of Vikings for the History Channel and am currently working on a pilot episode of “Dawn”, a series about the meeting of Modern humans and Neanderthals.
More of my work can be seen on my portfolio site www.Johnnymurphy1988.wix.com/portfolio
