STEPS Young Engineers Award 2026/2027 Teacher Registration Now Open!

Could your class be the winners of this year's Young Engineers Award?

Get your students thinking like engineers - register for the Young Engineers Award now! 

The STEPS Young Engineers Award is a nationwide competition for 3rd and 4th class students. Teams of up to six Young Engineers use the STEPS Project Book to guide them through creating their very own engineering project that will positively impact their local community.
 
The competition introduces engineering to young children and helps them to understand how engineers work together to improve our lives. You do not need any experience of engineering. The STEPS Project Book lays out the project steps in an easy-to-follow manner, guiding the students through each stage.

To help guide you through the award, you can access how-to videos from Mark the Science Guy, Múinteoir Valerie's handy resources, and weekly emails will keep you up to date at all times. Additional resources are available in the Digital Teachers Pack, once registered.
 
The highlight of the competition is Presentation Week, where students can present their projects to an engineer. This is an optional aspect of the award and is not judged. You can request a volunteer STEPS Engineer Role Model to visit the class to observe the students' project showcase once registered. Alternatively, you can ask a local engineer to visit: a parent engineer, college student or an engineer past pupil. 

With the introduction of Engineering as a specific strand of the primary curriculum, the Young Engineers Award is a great way of engaging with and achieving the learning outcomes set out in the curriculum - directing students to collaborate, plan and create prototypes, identify problems and solutions, and presenting and reporting their findings.
