Water abstraction refers to water taken from rivers, lakes or groundwater and conveyed to where it's needed. Across OECD countries, agricultural water abstraction rose by an average of 0.32% a year between 2013 and 2023. It's part of a broader pattern: production grew fastest (0.83% a year between 2013 and 2023), on-farm energy use rose too (0.48%), and only fertiliser use fell. Water abstraction increased more slowly than production (0.32%), but that continued growth still signals rising, not easing, pressure on water resources. Producing more with proportionally less water doesn't mean pressure is easing. |
