Student volunteering has become an increasingly important feature of higher education in Ireland, not only as a form of civic engagement but also as a pathway for skills development and employability. A central platform supporting this movement is StudentVolunteer.ie, which works in tandem with the concept of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Together, they highlight how learning outside the traditional classroom can be formally valued and integrated into academic and professional progression.
Student Volunteer Ireland, the organisation behind the platform, is a collaboration of seven Irish higher education institutions UL, UCC, UCD, UoG, DCU, TU Dublin, ATU collaboratively designed to promote, support, and recognise student volunteering.
Its mission is to strengthen student volunteering across Ireland and ensure that every third-level student has the opportunity to engage in meaningful community activity building students’ sense of belonging. StudentVolunteer.ie acts as a digital hub connecting students with volunteer-involving organisations such as charities, NGOs, schools, and public bodies. Through this system, students can browse opportunities, apply for roles, and track their volunteering hours in a structured way.
This technology has been recently awarded “Most Innovative Digital Transformation” at the 2026 Education Awards for centring the Sustainable Development Goals for student volunteers and their community partners to drive change and impact. Students can identify which of the SDGs their volunteering activities align to and the online e-module is a scaffold for further skill exploration.
