Nationwide success for Farm Business Options Training Programme

Over three hundred farmers and farm family members took part in the nationwide Farm Business Options Training Programme during the last quarter of 2025, delivered by Teagasc in partnership with Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) and other support organisations.

The training helped participants explore new business ventures, diversify their farm enterprises and gain practical skills in areas like artisan food production, rural tourism, renewable energy, and organic farming.

A central element of the events, the programme’s workshops combined expert guidance, real-life success stories from guest farmers, and direct access to mentors and agencies offering ongoing business support. This collaborative approach ensured that training was relevant, accessible, and tailored to local rural economies across Ireland.

Bernard Doorley, Farm Business Options Coordinator for the Teagasc Laois, Kildare and Offaly Advisory Region, who led a food and tourism course, said: "Farmers are eager to diversify and modernise their businesses. The training gave them practical tools and confidence to explore new opportunities in food production and rural tourism. Linking them with local enterprise supports makes a real difference in turning ideas into viable ventures."

Anne O'Malley, Coordinator of the two-day Artisan Food and Farm Diversification event in the Teagasc Mayo Advisory Region, added: "The two-day Artisan Food and Farm Diversification event in Mayo brought together a motivated group of farmers and experts from diverse sectors. With engaging workshops, insightful talks and valuable site visits, participants gained practical knowledge and built strong local networks to support their business ventures. Thanks to all involved for making it such a rewarding experience."

Eimear Hughes, a new Coordinator running her first course in the Teagasc Galway, Clare Advisory Region, shared feedback from participants: "Attendees highlighted how the event opened doors and created valuable networking opportunities. They appreciated learning how to conduct deeper research to utterly understand who their customers are. Many emphasised the importance of aligning personal values and passions with the business path they choose. The speakers were described as inspirational and generous with their knowledge, making the sessions both motivating and informative."

Commenting on the overall success of the Farm Business Options Training Programme in 2025, Barry Caslin, Teagasc Energy and Rural Development Specialist and Coordinator of the Farm Business Options Programme, commented: "The success of the 2025 training reflects Teagasc’s commitment to supporting rural development through education and collaboration. By working closely with Local Enterprise Offices and other agencies, we provide farmers with the knowledge and networks needed to diversify successfully and sustainably. We encourage anyone interested to register their interest for the 2026 courses to keep the new business idea momentum going."
