Your Route to Success: The Transport Operations and Commercial Driving Apprenticeship

Are you looking for a career that’s exciting, hands-on, and full of opportunity? Do you want to earn a wage while you learn valuable skills and acquire qualification that keep the country and world moving?  Then the Transport Operations and Commercial Driving Apprenticeship could be the perfect route for you.

Why Choose a Career in Transport?

The transport and logistics sector is the backbone of the economy. Every product in every shop, every delivery to every door — it all depends on skilled transport professionals. Right now, there’s a national shortage of qualified drivers and logistics staff, meaning there’s never been a better time to join the industry.

Qualified drivers are in high demand, and this apprenticeship gives you the skills, experience, and confidence to step straight into a rewarding and secure career.

Qualifications You’ll Get:

The apprenticeship leads to a Higher Certificate (NFQ Level 6) in Business in Transport Services from ATU Sligo. You will also earn your C/CE driver licence.

The programme runs for two years, with the academic part taking place from September to May. During term time, you’ll spend one day per week in online classes, so you can study from anywhere in Ireland, and four days per week with your host employer, getting hands-on, real-world experience.

There is one intake each year in September, giving you a clear pathway to start your career.

What You’ll Learn:

As an apprentice, you’ll gain real-world experience alongside classroom learning, giving you a powerful mix of knowledge and practical ability. You’ll learn how to:

  • Safely and efficiently operate commercial vehicles.
  • Plan routes and schedules that keep goods moving.
  • Understand transport regulations, compliance, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Deliver excellent customer service and communicate professionally.
  • Use the latest transport technology and digital logistics tools.

By the end of the programme, you’ll be fully qualified, confident, and ready to take on a professional driving or operations role.

Earn While You Learn

Unlike traditional study routes, an apprenticeship means you’re paid while you train. You’ll gain internationally recognised qualifications and valuable work experience — all without the burden of student debt. It’s a smart way to start your career with financial independence and real-world skills from day one.

A Career for Everyone

The transport industry is changing — and there’s a growing focus on diversity and inclusion. Women, career changers, and school leavers alike are finding success behind the wheel and in logistics operations.
If you’re someone who enjoys being on the move, solving problems, and taking responsibility, this apprenticeship is open to you.

No matter your background, you’ll find a welcoming and supportive community that values skill, dedication, and teamwork over stereotypes.

Your Future on the Move

Graduates of the Transport Operations and Commercial Driving Apprenticeship go on to exciting careers such as:

  • HGV and LGV Driver
  • Transport Planner or Operations Assistant
  • Fleet Manager or Logistics Coordinator

The skills you gain can take you across Ireland — or around the world.
