Adult Literacy for Life
Media Literacy
International Literacy Day falls on September 8 every year. Literacy is an issue for about 1 in 5 adults in Ireland. The Adult Literacy for Life Strategy is working to make Ireland a literacy friendly society by improving awareness of literacy needs and by promoting ways to help people with unmet literacy needs.
While most people think of literacy as reading and writing skills there are several literacies that affect a person’s ability to participate in society. These literacy needs can include digital literacy, financial literacy and numeracy, as well as health literacy and media literacy.
Unmet literacy needs can have a profound effect on your access to services and your health.
In 2025 the ALL strategy is promoting Media Literacy with a campaign focussing on  “STOP, THINK, CHECK”. We often receive messages from a variety of sources, including strangers, family and friends.  We are asking people to use the STOP THINK CHECK technique when we read or see messages which are asking us to respond to them.
Many of us have received text messages asking us to click on a link or provide information, or seen videos that contain surprising information and news. Before you respond, try the following:
STOP – were you expecting to see or receive this message?
THINK – what am I being asked to do? Send money, give my personal details, keep watching?
CHECK – is this what it says it is? Is it reliable?
If you are uncertain you can check with someone you trust, a friend or family member or someone working in a local service.
STOP, THINK, CHECK
