When the Department of Further and Higher Education was established, the goal to establish apprenticeships as a major route to skills development in Ireland was an aspiration laid out in the Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025.
As we embark on 2024 I am delighted to point to the momentous changes underway in our apprenticeship sector outlined clearly in this second annual report from the National Apprenticeship Office.
2023 was a record year of growth and expansion, with over 70 apprenticeship programmes now available and 17 more in development. The population of apprentices in training is heading for 30,000 with almost 9,000 new apprentices registering for training last year. And I am really pleased to note the growth in women choosing apprenticeships to develop their careers, with women making up almost 10% of the apprentice now compared to just 2% in 2018. We are going in the right direction.
