Embracing equity and women who build in the latest issue of the CIF Construction magazine – out now

Welcome to this month’s edition of Construction magazine.

In the run-up to the CIF’s International Women’s Day Conference on March 8, we’re focusing on celebrating the achievements and contributions of women working within the sector, while also acknowledging there is still work to do to encourage more females to choose this tremendous industry as a promising and rewarding career option.

Currently, just nine per cent of the construction industry is made up of women who build. But those who do are making a powerful impression and leaving a lasting impact with their work. To highlight the need to address the obvious underrepresentation, we’ve spoken to nine different women whose professional endeavours across the built environment showcase the vast array of exciting roles that are out there and ready to be embraced.

Take our cover star Lisa O’Shea photographed by Maura Hickey, who went from plasterer to chartered quantity surveyor and is now giving back through mentoring, or Amazon Web Service’s Fiona Forde who has helped develop a new programme to encourage unemployed women to return to work in construction with confidence.

Our reporter Aidan Priestley also sits down with Joanne Treacy, the CIF’s new Head of Southern Region Services, as she shares her thoughts on how to build a more holistic industry and entice a younger generation to join. It’s an inspiring round-up. Enjoy the read.
