Two-Day Online Workshop on Developing your Trauma ToolkitIICP

Comprehensive workshop providing a thorough understanding of what trauma is and how to engage with it safely

Due to current social distancing guidelines, this course will be delivered online.


This 2 day interactive, theoretical and practical workshop will introduce the central principles of trauma-informed practice & help therapists develop confidence in working with clients’ trauma. Combining current trauma research, experiential exercises, skills practice & taking a somatic approach, it will explore some of trauma’s neurological aspects, develop familiarity with interventions that address these aspects and aid the practitioner in developing their trauma toolkit.


Course Content:

  • Key components, sources & symptoms of psychological & development trauma;
  • Triphasic model of trauma & the therapist’s role in each
  • An introduction to polyvagal theory
  • The importance of regulation and how to use it in therapy;
  • The importance of the therapeutic relationship using a polyvagal lens
  • Some stage-specific practical skills and interventions to help in your work to:
  • Help clients expand their window of tolerance and learn to regulate
  • Bring a client back from a hypo/hyper aroused state
    • Help clients identify their feelings and behaviours
    • Start to process traumatic memories using the body
    • Help clients develop resources, re-orientate to & appreciate their strengths;
    • Begin to integrate their experiences and make meaning of their trauma.

Entry Requirements:
This workshop is for mental health practitioners interested in learning more about the subject area.

April Intake:                       Friday, 12 August and Saturday, 13 August 2022

Times:                                  9:30am – 4:30pm

This workshop will take place online, using a software called Zoom. Participants will be sent a link to join the online platform before the course commences.


Patricia Allen-Garrett,

BSc (Hons) Psychology, MIAHIP, ECP.
Patricia works as a humanistic and integrative psychotherapist in private practice and in a community setting and is also engaged in group work with people who have attempted suicide.

She has been involved in the training of counsellors since 2008 and has particular interest in both trauma and bereavement for many years in addition to lecturing on IICP’s MA in Pluralistic Counselling and Psychotherapy.
