2022 Equine Census

DEADLINE FOR 2022 CENSUS COMPLETION IS FAST APPROACHING

For those who have not yet completed the 2022 Equine Census it must be submitted by Friday 21st April 2023 to provide DAFM with details of all equines (horses, ponies, donkeys, mules and zebras) present on your holding on census night, 30th November 2022.  

Note - Submission of a 2022 equine census recording a minimum of three equines is one of the requirements for eligibility for TAMS 3 grant funding. Failure to submit completed census data to the Department renders applications ineligible for equine investments under TAMS3 in 2023.  Applications under TAMS in 2024 will require completion of the 2023 census.

Teagasc Equine Education Tour BOOKING CLOSES APRIL 26th

The tour will visit Belgium & The Netherlands from September 23rd to 27th 2023. Please note the booking deadline is 5pm on April 26th 2023. 

Please book with GTI by phone prior to this deadline to ensure availability. Any bookings after the deadline will be subject to availability and likely subject to an additional charge.

Young Breeder Training 

Young Breeders visited the Army Equitation School in McKee Barracks Dublin in April. Comdt. Tom Freyne and his colleagues provided a superb display of horses and horsemanship. The session began viewing a selection of horses at different stages of production and different models in the flesh without tack. 

Subsequently a selection of ridden horses demonstrating the traits, character and ridability demanded by the sport of show jumping were assessed. Most evident to all was the attention to detail, and sympathetic approach of the production system at the school.

Training is planned for May 6^th at Atlantic Stables, Kilcolgan, Co. Galway home to show jumper Aoife McCabe and her string of horses, followed by a visit to Edie Murray Hayden’s Gormanstown Stud near Kilcullen, Co. Kildare on May 27^th.  Selection for the 2024 World Championship team to travel to Denmark will commence in the autumn so those with an eye on that goal should get involved now to give themselves every chance of success. However, training is all inclusive, and not just for those who are competitively spirited. Open to all aged 15-25 years of age.

Let's Talk Equine - April 2023 webinar recording

In the April episode of 'Let's Talk Equine' webinar, Wendy Conlon, Teagasc Equine Specialist was joined by Philippa Scott and Hannah Gordon to discuss ‘different horses for different courses’. 

Philippa and Hannah, utilising Connemara Pony; Irish Draught; Thoroughbred; traditional and warmblood cross examples, gave an insightful explanation of their involvement in the amateur performance and showing markets. Plenty of key advice was shared in relation to the production and marketing of these horses/ponies and what their customers place value on.
