Smart Futures STEM careers roadshow for secondary students at the University of Limerick

As part of Science Week 2013 the University of Limerick is honoured to have the following guests visit UL to speak to secondary school pupils on careers in science, engineering and technology in Ireland.

Dr Rita Hickey (Teagasc) Senior Research Officer in the Food Biosciences Department at Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark

Rita is leading a research programme that investigates the biological properties of oligosaccharides isolated from food sources. In particular, she explores approaches to extract, identify and validate physiologically active oligosaccharides for use as ingredients in functional foods. Rita was awarded a first class honours degree in Science from UCD and successfully completed her PhD research in Teagasc in 2003 on “The Development of Molecular Tools for the Improvement of Food Cultures”. She was subsequently employed as a Research Officer by the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, an SFI-funded CSET. Rita then worked for Abbott Diagnostics as a Process Specialist in Sligo before returning to Teagasc Moorepark for her current role.

Colum Cronin (SAP) – Colum is a software engineer with SAP

Speakers will speak on the occupations available in Ireland today and required in the future. They will discuss the areas where there is demand and skills needed, jobs of the future – skills for jobs we don’t know exist yet. The session will be followed by a Q&A session for students with special prizes to give away for the best career question received! This event is particularly relevant to 2nd years, 3rd years and transition year students for direction when choosing subjects for the Leaving Certificate. It is also very important for 5th and 6th years who are considering their choices for third level.
