(5M2181) for September 2022 at the College of Further Education and Training Ennis Campus
Applied Social Studies is a full-time course starting in September 2022. It includes Social Studies, Young People & Society, Special Needs Assisting, Psychology, Intercultural Studies, Research and Study Skills, Work Experience and Communications. Learners will have access to a range of additional supports including assistance with IT, numeracy, literacy and general learning. All learners on campus have access to guidance and counselling services.
The course is dual outcome, in that learners can go directly to the workplace or progress to higher education. The course is now open for applicants and learners can register as PLC or VTOS depending on their individual circumstances.
Damien O’Connell, VTOS Coordinator commented that “there are growing employment opportunities in Social Care including youth work, working with people with physical disabilities or intellectual disabilities, working with the homeless community etc. In addition, learners from our course can work as an SNA.”
Work experience is an integral part of the course. This gives learners hands on experience in a suitable setting of their choice and helps with future career and progression choices.
PLC Coordinator, Marie O'Callaghan, added that “the social care sector is due to become regulated in the coming year and it is essential that workers have access to a recognised qualification. We have close links with TUS that offers degree programmes in their Ennis campus. This is a natural progression option for our learners.”
