NCGE Bulletin Issue 5.0

TomNCGE would like to wish you a very happy 2019 and best wishes for the academic year ahead. For its part, NCGE will continue to support the delivery of good practice in guidance and to inform the development of guidance policy at national level. We hope that you can continue on this journey with us. NCGE will keep you up to date through this monthly bulletin and our other communication channels.

Over the course of 2018 a number of additional resources were added to the NCGE School Guidance Handbook. Some of these are listed below. This is YOUR online resource to support  you in the development and delivery of your school guidance programme and NCGE will continue to add to the Handbook over the coming school year.

NCGE FET Guidance update
The Adult Guidance Management System (AGMS) is a client management information system developed by NCGE and DES over 10 years ago to support guidance service provision to clients and to  produce qualitative and quantitative reports to inform local and national guidance planning. In line with GDPR requirements and to provide supports for the FET guidance planning and provision in to the future, NCGE is establishing a working group to include representatives of national agencies and ETBs to review the AGMS and make proposals to SOLAS and DES for the future developments of this data gathering system. The first meeting of this group will be held at the end of January 2019.  

Euroguidance Ireland CPD – Guidance Counselling for Mobility
With a growing number of students going abroad to study either as part of an Erasmus+ exchange, for a few weeks, a semester or for the entire duration of their degree, the Mobility Guidance Counselling module provides guidance counsellors with the skills they need to support students in their quest to study, work or volunteer abroad. This CPD course was designed by Euroguidance Ireland with support from Euroguidance Sweden. It focuses on the process how to support the student through the 3 phases of mobility – preparation, induction and re-integration.  The module is divided into 4 parts and may be completed online at the convenience of the individual Guidance Counsellor>> Register today

NCGE WSG Framework: Resources
In support of schools using the NCGE: A Whole School Guidance Framework; accompanying planning resources are now available for all schools to use. These resources employ a whole school approach to guidance, applicable across both Junior and Senior Cycle, and are currently organised into three main sections:

  • Exploring Whole School Guidance in our School
  • Convening a School Guidance Group
  • Information Gathering & Evidence in our School

*NEW* ‘Guidance Matters’ publication
In December 2018 NCGE re-launched its bi-annual publication as Guidance Matters’. This was done in recognition of the 50th issue of what was previously entitled ‘NCGE News’ and you should have received it to your inbox before Christmas. A limited edition printed copy is being distributed to all post-primary schools and to guidance counsellors working in other selected Irish educational settings next week.
