Keeping up to date with Irish College Leuven

Leuven wins top European award!

We are delighted to open this month’s newsletter with some great news.  Last month, the European Commission awarded the City of Leuven the title of Innovation Capital of Europe 2020.  You will find more details about this fantastic achievement in our article below.

Next week we will be hosting our first online webinar.  In partnership with the O’Donnell family and their connection to Leuven, we have a host of guest speakers for our event on Wednesday 21st October.  More information and details of how to register are included.

We were very happy with the feedback from our clients who carried out successful meetings and events with us during September.  All activities have been following COVID-19 regulations in Belgium and we have introduced new standards to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our guests.  Irish College Leuven is the ideal venue for these times.

Our online programmes for higher education and training bodies are available for this academic year.  We are very happy to support our clients at this time with our initiative to provide a new element to their courses that allows their students to engage with Europe online.

Thank you for continuing to read our newsletters at this time and we hope you and family continue to stay safe.  We look forward to seeing you back in Leuven soon.

Leuven – European Capital of Innovation 2020

The City of Leuven was awarded the title of European Capital of Innovation by the European Commission last month during European Research and Innovation Days.  The city saw off competition from other cities across Europe and was awarded the prestigious title along with a prize fund of €1,000,000 under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme.

The Commission recognised that “the city aims to become one of Europe’s Labs of the Future through a mission-oriented model that facilitates collaborative innovation. Different groups of stakeholders come together, with the common purpose of innovating around complex challenges from climate change and the shift to a circular economy to ensuring high-quality education and care. Leuven is not only providing increased opportunities for innovating to its citizens but also actively involving them in testing their ideas in the city.”

Memorialising Émigré Dignity – The Cultural
Heritage of St Anthony’s College, Leuven

2020 marks the Quatercentenary of the first burial in the Franciscans’ Chapel of Saint Anthony’s College, Leuven. Donal Oge O’Donnell, nephew of the famous Red Hugh O’Donnell, Prince of Tyrconnell, left Ireland as part of the retinue of the Flight of the Earls in 1607, when the College was founded, and joined Spanish forces in Flanders, where he died in 1620.

To mark this, and honour the 250 Irish émigré friars, scholars, soldiers and friends interred or associated, with the O’Donnell family we will host an online webinar with presentations from key speakers.  The event will take place on Wednesday 21st October at 15h00 CET (14h00 Ireland).
