DkIT Business Course’s Inside Track on Industry

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) recently launched 8 new Honours Degree courses, 3 of which have a business focus. These new courses were notably developed in conjunction with business leaders in the region. This new suite of programmes was created with the view to meet industry’s ever-changing needs. DkIT prides itself on its close ties with regional businesses which leaves its graduates job ready and highly employable with the relevant skill sets required by organisations.

Getting the inside track on the current market needs is key for creating effective education. John Scott from Combilift who’s current role is Business Development primarily in the Asian Markets, is one of such industry insiders who has collaborated and assisted DkIT in their business course development and creation.

John is a DkIT graduate who has a long affiliation with the Institute having first attended DkIT for a level 7 Business Degree. He subsequently attained the level 8 BBS Hons and an MBS in Marketing and Entrepreneurship at DkIT. John who hails from Monaghan initially joined DkIT from Monaghan Institute as a direct entry student to Year 2 of the Level 7 Business programme. John said, “I was always drawn towards business in secondary school but after my leaving certificate I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, so I did a 1-year IT course in Monaghan Institute before moving on to a Business Management & Administration for Level 7 & 8 before doing my MBS”. After graduating from his MBS in DkIT he joined Combilift where he has been employed for 12 years.

John spoke about how his educational journey in DkIT equipped him for the real world, he said “My Level 7 & 8 business courses give me a lot of background in Business Management, Marketing, and Strategy. There was quite a lot of group & team work and even a large group project with the entire class. Looking back now all these group work modules prepared me for industry. For every aspect of business, it is critical to be able to work within teams”. He further added “The MBS in Marketing and Entrepreneurship was very intensive with a substantial workload especially in the 2nd Semester. Deadlines at times were very tight but I think this actually made us work better & smarter, even if we didn’t think that at the time”.

John currently sits on the School Industry Advisory Board and said “The idea of the board is to get opinions from business practitioners with a view to identify any opportunities of making graduates even more employable & valuable to industry.  I think it is good feedback for DkIT and it explores what additional skills would be beneficial for graduates”.  John recently attended the launch of the 8 New Degree Courses in DkIT as he had input as an Industry Board Advisor and reported he was delighted to see the extensive work placement focus on many of the courses now on offer.

Speaking of his own experience as a student in DkIT, John said, “I have so many positive memories that I treasure from my time in the Institute which include my classmates, we were all quite close as a group. I also liked how you got to know the lecturers on a first name basis, and they were very helpful in offering guidance in course projects. I really enjoyed the clubs & societies also. I have a lot of happy memories from my time at events, tournaments, matches especially with the men’s soccer team”.

The three new Honours Degree Business courses include, BA Honours in Digital Marketing & Strategic Communications, BB Honours in Business with Management, and BB Honours in International Business with Digitalisation,
