Coding - a new world for your child this autumnOlus

Autumn & Spring Terms 2021/22

A world of coding awaits

Open their minds to infinite possibilities!
Courses at the Academy of Code are all about possibilities. Coding introduces students to a whole new world, one where they can build anything they can imagine, and our Pathway to Computer Science is designed to give them the guidance they need until they're ready to strike out on their own.
More details
Our curriculum is unlike anything else out there. Our "pre-coding" grade 1 classes are for students who have little experience with computers. Delivered in "parent & child" format and suitable for students aged 7-8, these classes bring students up to speed with keyboard and mouse skills while also introducing key foundational skills of computational thinking and mechanical reasoning.

In grades 2 and 3 (ages 9-11) students become familiar with block based coding in Scratch, building exciting games and animations, and all the time working on those critical foundational skills that they will use all the way through the course. They will also be exposed to languages like HTML, CSS, javascript and Python here - plenty of variety to keep them engaged, and keep their eyes open to the possibilities ahead of them!

From grade 4 (ages 11+) students focus primarily on Processing, an extraordinary graphics framework which allows us to teach all the most important coding concepts in incredibly engaging ways. As they progress to grade 10 students will dive deeper and deeper into the world of technology, learning about coding patterns and data structures at a level which would be right at home in the final year of a degree course in computer science.
We also offer second stream classes for students who want to take their coding journey even wider and attend classes twice per week. At fresher (ages 9-11) and junior (ages 11-13) we have Python in term 1 (up to Christmas) and CSS Animations in term 2 (after Christmas) - classes designed to be fun, engaging and to spark students' imaginations as they see the wide world of possibilities open to them.

(New places: Wednesday evening second stream classes are now sold out for freshers and juniors, but we have added new Thursday evening classes. Places strictly limited - get them while they're hot!)

For senior coding students (age 13+) we are delighted to be introducing our brand new Godot Game Development course. This has been a long time in the making, and after a trial run in the summer we're delighted to be bringing this introduction to game engines to the wider audience of our regular term time classes.

This powerful, open source game engine gives students the perfect platform to express their creativity through code. We've been waiting quite a while for a game engine that met the needs of our students and worked for our class environment; this course has been a very long time coming and we couldn't be more excited to finally have it open for registration!

This course is only open to students who have completed at least one term at the Academy of Code - some previous coding experience is required, and places are strictly limited. Click here for full details and to register.

Finally we want to wish the very best of luck to all of the 2022 Leaving Cert students getting their results today, especially those who studied any of their computer science course with us, either through our summer grinds or through our partner schools. This was the first year we were directly involved with a significant number of students, particularly in Coláiste Eoin, Coláiste Íosagáin and the Institute of Education, and we're incredibly proud of the work all our students put in over the past two years.

Whatever happens today you all have a bright future ahead of you, and should be really proud of yourselves!

For the rest of you - we can't wait to get started again in two weeks time!

All the best,

Diarmuid & the Academy of Code team
