Welcome to your March BSBI Newsletter, tailor-made for those on the island of Ireland.
In this issue: book for the Irish Spring Conference in Dublin, and for events in Northern Ireland and online; seize your last chance to claim a discount when you buy Plant Atlas 2020; but first: read about Irish botany and an inspirational female botanist in the latest issue of our scientific journal.
British & Irish Botany 7.1 published
The latest issue of our scientific journal has been published, with two papers which we think will be of particular interest to readers in Ireland:
Sylvia Reynolds tells us about the life and achievements of her great grand-aunt Charlotte Grace O’Brien, a pioneering C19th Irish female botanist.
Caroline Plant et al. report on new records of New Zealand Pigmyweed from two Irish lakes, and what this tells us about the distribution of this invasive alien plant in Ireland.
Papers about limestone pavements, Procumbent Yellow-Sorrel, an endemic hawkweed and new combinations in Sorbus complete this latest issue.
There will be talks and workshop on a theme of 'Recording', with sessions on using BSBI's new Recording App and the Distribution Database (DDb), led by James Drever, BSBI's Data Support Officer. These sessions are aimed at everyone, especially those with an interest in doing more recording and/or learning more about the data that BSBI hold. The event is free but booking is essential.
Plant Atlas 2020 is your go-to resource for information about <3,400 native and introduced plant species, with distribution maps, photo galleries, information about flowering times, altitudinal range, and trends: is the plant on the increase or in decline?
The Plant Atlas 2020 website is a wonderful resource but many of us also value having a physical book to look at. So we are delighted that Princeton University Press, who published the Plant Atlas, are offering BSBI members a 50% discount if they order the 2-volume book from them before the end of March 2025,
meaning you could join and immediately earn back the price of membership in savings.
