Ballyfermot College Officially Launches New Visual Effects Programme with a Masterclass by Irish Oscar Winner Richie Baneham
Ballyfermot College of Further Education (BCFE) will officially launch its new Visual Effects (VFX) and 3D Technology Programme this Friday with masterclasses by international industry experts including Irish Oscar winner and graduate of the college Richie Baneham.
Baneham, who won the Academy Award for his ground-breaking work on the movie ‘AVATAR’, also worked on ‘LORD OF THE RINGS’ and ‘THE IRON GIANT’. He will be joined on stage by other industry heavyweights Troy Saliba, Animation Supervisor, Sony Pictures Imageworks, (‘ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS’, ‘OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL’) and Graham Gallagher, Creative Director, Windmill Lane Post Production (‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’, ‘GRAVITY’).
The new two year diploma course, which was developed in consultation with the local industry, will teach students the sort of skills behind the spectacular visual effects in movies like ‘STAR WARS’ and television series like ‘GAME OF THRONES’ using industry-standard software and hardware like Nuke, Maya, PhotoShop, Arnold and V-Ray.
Speaking in advance of the launch, Richie Baneham said: “It’s great to see Ballyfermot College launch this course in VFX and 3D Technology which is not only relevant to cinema but also to visual industries that are in their infancy like VR, AR and even games.”
BCFE Principal Maureen Conway added: “We’re delighted to be officially launching this new course which will provide a pool of talented graduates to the growing 3D Animation and VFX sectors in Ireland and internationally.”
The programme, which started in September with 17 students, will be delivered by college staff as well as industry practitioners from local studios like Brown Bag Films, Egg Post Production, Windmill Lane VFX and others.
Commenting on the course and the launch event, course co-ordinator Gareth Lee said: “This new course has been developed in collaboration with industry and it’s exciting to have industry experts and graduates of the college like Richie and Graham speak at the launch and inspire the next generation of VFX/3D artists.”
