Unemployment rate continues to fall

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for October 2016CSO was 7.7%, down from 7.9% in September 2016 and down from 9.2% in October 2015. The seasonally adjusted number of persons unemployed was 168,800 in October 2016, down from 173,200 when compared to the September 2016 figure and a decrease of 29,700 when compared to October 2015.

  • In October 2016 the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9.0% for males, down from 9.2% September 2016 and down from 10.8% in October 2015.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for females in October 2016 was 6.2%, down from 6.4% in September 2016 and down from 7.3% in October 2015.
  • The seasonally adjusted number of males unemployed in October 2016 was 107,300. This is a decrease of 2,300 when compared to the September 2016 figure of 109,600. In October 2016 the seasonally adjusted number of females unemployed was 61,500, a decrease of 2,100 when compared to September 2016.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for persons aged 15-24 years (youth unemployment rate) was 15.1% in October 2016, a decrease from 15.9% in September 2016.
